History: Lord of the Rings LCG Timeline (Updated 1/11/2014)

As I mentioned in my earlier discussion of play style, the Galadriel player is focused on aesthetics and staying true to the theme of the source material. With hundreds of character spanning four ages and thousands of years, it can be hard to keep track of when a given character was alive, and with whom they were likely to have interacted. What follows is a timeline of major events in which I have placed, as accurately as possible, all of the unique characters that are included in the Lord of the Rings LCG. This is a living document, so as FFG prints new heroes and unique allies, I will be adding them to the timeline.

  2. Philip B says:

This is awesome! At first I didn’t realize that each link was to a card, but it’s amazing to see how much lore went into the card creation, referring back to before the first age with Daeron’s Runes. It must have been difficult deciding what to leave out, like Thorondor, because so many cards refer to something significant in Middle-Earth’s history. Bravo, and thanks for the detailed work.

  3. Beorn says:

Thanks Philip, I’m glad that you like it. Don’t worry, I will go back soon and fill in the (probably several) major events related to Thorondor. I am really hoping that the next Hobbit Expansion has Gwaihir as a hero, or at least an ally. As vassals of Manwë, the eagles play a rather large part in the unfolding of the history of Middle-Earth, particularly so in the struggles to overthrow Morgoth. There are so many unique characters (and attachments) in the game already that it takes time to sort everything out, especially in the 3rd age where everything gets crowded. As this is a living document, I do plan on getting all of the unique cards cross-referenced. Except, of course, for made up stuff like Eleanor, Beravor, Thalin and Henemarth Riversong.

  4. Gobliin says:

Great work. I love story related article.

  5. Tess says:

The link to your “discussion of play style” does not work!

  6. happycatmachine says:

    Hi Beorn,

The links to the lcg database appear to be broken. They all open to the default ‘Gondorian Spearman’ card.

What a fabulous resource this is.

    • Beorn says:

Yes, unfortunately lotrlcg.com recently changed their URL scheme which broke essentially all of the card links on my blog. I need to transition all of my links to CardGameDB.com. Needless to say, this will be a monumentally tedious task.

      • GeckoTH says:

Yeah, lotrlcg.com is right in the middle of a bit of an overhaul… But all of the cards are being worked on, and hopefully all the latest cards will be added soon.

    • Beorn says:

Yeah, the overhaul I completely understand, it’s breaking all of the old links that’s a huge bummer. I really liked the clean and simple UI of lotrlcg.com – which was why I chose it over CardGameDB in the first place. I appreciate the attempt to give the UI an update, and I even agree with making the URL scheme cleaner by removing “.php?CardKey=”. However, I really wish that the old urls did a redirect to the new scheme, rather than just being dead. If I am going to go through every article on my blog to fix these links, I probably won’t point to the new links on lotrlcg.com because there is no guarantee that they won’t break again in the future.

I really do appreciate the site so I don’t want to sound ungrateful for the resource that it has provided up to this point, but as someone with a limited amount of free time, I would much rather be creating content than fixing dead links. What’s worse, now everyone who goes back through my old articles will be reporting dead links for everything. This is certainly not the experience I want readers to have as it makes the blog look shoddy. I will probably have to make a post about this in the near future, just so everyone understands that the links will be transitioning.

      • GeckoTH says:

I completely understand your frustration. I’ll ask the developer if there’s anything that can be done to help (I’m only helping out with some graphics and card data when I’ve got spare time). I certainly wouldn’t blame you for switching your links to CardGameDB — I know I’ve been burned by similar things in the past.

However, you could try some WordPress plug-ins to help you fix broken links, such as Broken Link Checker: http://wordpress.org/plugins/broken-link-checker/
I haven’t tried it myself yet, but it looks like it’ll help fix links across all your posts. As a bonus, when you fix one specific link, it should propagate that change across all blog posts with the same link.

        Hope that helps!

      • Beorn says:

Thanks, I will take a look at that and see if it can solve the problem.

  7. diedertk says:

I know that everything has to die some time, for nothing is forever, but still it hurts when I read about the death of so many heroes, especially the Dwarves seem to get punished for being small.. Death is always so definite, no resurrection in the ‘real’ Middle-Earth. I am always dreaming of the day that Tolkien resurrects or reincarnetes into Gandalf so he could answer our far to many questions or at least write another novel.
